Advocates Demand Congress Prevent Worker Exploitation in AI Development
Data workers and civil society organizations have penned a letter to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, calling on legislators to protect their rights amidst a potential “dystopian future” of surveillance and inadequate pay. The letter, delivered prior to Schumer’s bipartisan AI Insight Forum, underscores the essential contribution of data workers towards the progress of artificial intelligence.
Meeting of Tech Leaders and Lawmakers
Schumer’s forum, which aims to regulate AI, will bring together industry leaders such as Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg with lawmakers. The meeting is expected to include over 20 guests, including executives from companies like Stripe and Micron, as well as advocates like NAACP president Derrick Johnson and AFL-CIO Technology Institute director Amanda Ballantyne.
Fighting Against Worker Exploitation
Turkopticon, a group supporting Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) workers, has signed the letter to Schumer. MTurk workers have long been hired by businesses to train AI algorithms, often earning below minimum wage. The letter calls for collective bargaining rights and protection against predatory surveillance and management systems for workers like those at MTurk.
Rebalancing Power in the Workplace
The letter emphasizes the need for robust protections related to workplace technology and a rebalancing of power between workers and employers. By doing so, advocates argue, the economy and tech innovation can be redirected towards more equitable and sustainable outcomes.
