Gauss to Be Integrated into Next Galaxy S24 Handset
Samsung has revealed its latest generative AI model, Samsung Gauss, which will be integrated into the upcoming Galaxy S24 handset. The AI model was showcased during Samsung’s AI forum and is capable of generating and editing images, composing emails, summarizing documents, and even assisting with coding tasks. The Galaxy S24 is expected to be announced in early 2024.
Local Device Functionality for Enhanced Efficiency
Parts of Samsung’s Gauss model can run locally on the device itself, a move that Samsung executives hinted at last month. The company plans to incorporate generative AI into “core functions” of its mobile devices starting in 2024, and the Galaxy S24 is likely to be one of the first devices to benefit from this integration.
Named After a Legendary Mathematician
The Gauss model developed by Samsung Research is named after Carl Friedrich Gauss, the mathematician who established normal distribution theory, which is the backbone of machine learning and AI. The model includes Samsung Gauss Language, Samsung Gauss Code, and Samsung Gauss Image.
Enhanced Work Efficiency and Consumer Experience
Samsung Gauss Language, a generative language model, improves work efficiency by assisting with tasks such as composing emails, summarizing documents, and translating content. It can also enhance the overall consumer experience by enabling smarter device control when integrated into products. This integration could be a significant selling point for the Galaxy S24, especially if Gauss can run certain image and language models locally on the handset, without relying on cloud-powered models.
Generative AI for Bixby Virtual Assistant
Samsung is already incorporating generative AI into its Bixby virtual assistant for home appliances. However, it will not be as powerful as ChatGPT. The goal is to enable more natural communication and context understanding, even without explicit commands from the user.
Expanding Applications for Future User Experiences
Samsung Gauss is currently being used internally to enhance employee productivity. However, Samsung plans to expand its use to various product applications in the near future, promising new and improved user experiences.
