Introduction
Rapper Pras Michél, known for his role in the Fugees, has filed a motion for a retrial, claiming that his former lawyer mishandled his criminal conspiracy case by using AI technology to create closing arguments. Michél and his new legal team argue that the arguments generated by AI were frivolous, confusing, and failed to effectively counter the prosecution’s case’s key flaws.
AI Technology Used in Courtroom
Michél’s team pointed to a press release from a company called EyeLevel.AI, where his former lawyer, David Kenner, discussed the use of their AI platform in the trial. Kenner praised the technology as a game changer for complex litigation. EyeLevel.AI’s website states that it helps add GPT capabilities to legal applications, among other services.
Accusations Against Former Lawyer
In addition to the use of AI, Michél’s legal team accuses Kenner of outsourcing trial preparations to inexperienced lawyers and failing to familiarize himself with the case’s statutes. They also claim that Kenner had a financial interest in EyeLevel.AI, raising concerns about a potential conflict of interest.
Gray Area in AI Use
The use of generative AI in the courtroom remains a gray area, as there are currently no regulations prohibiting lawyers from utilizing such technology. However, it is worth noting that AI technology often produces inaccurate results. Some lawyers who used similar AI programs for trial preparations have faced reprimands after the AI invented fictitious cases for citation.
Michél’s Conviction and Allegations
Micel was convicted by a Washington federal court for conspiracy to defraud the US and helping Malaysian businessman Jho Low and the Chinese government gain access to US officials. He was accused of accepting around $88 million to introduce Low to both Barack Obama and Donald Trump. Michél is currently out on bond pending sentencing.
Musical Reunion Amid Legal Battle
Despite his ongoing legal battle, Michél was able to reunite with his Fugees bandmates, Wyclef Jean and Lauryn Hill, during Hill’s Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 25th anniversary tour. The trio performed their hit song “Ready or Not,” presumably without discussing AI.
